Is An Online Graduate Degree Right For You?
According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the
numbers of online college degree students is continuing to grow.
Online degrees are particularly popular for those who have already
entered the workforce, or are planning to re-enter the workforce
after raising a family.
But online is also an option for young students, prior to starting
their careers. It provides all the advantages of continuing to live
at home, have a part time job and build your career foundation all
at the same time.
There are many reasons for those opting to earn their degrees online,
or any other way:
- Wanting to change careers
- Never had time to complete a degree earlier in your life
- Your company demands continuing education or a degree for promotion
- Personal goals - self improvement by adding new knowledge and
skills.
No matter what the reason, completing a degree online takes a personal
committment and good time management skills.
Being an online student is not for everyone. If you are considering
completing your college education online, it is important that you
understand the environment you will be working in.
Online Degree Course Considerations
Answer the following questions to see if you are suited to being
a 'Virtual Student' and earning your degree online.
Are you self-motivated & independent? –
you will need to be able to motivate yourself and stay on-task with
all assignments. Are you able to set goals and reach them. This
is key to success.
Do you have good reading comprehension skills?
– many students find learning in real classrooms easy, with
listening being a primary learning channel. Once they enter an environment
where reading is a much greater emphasis on learning, they find
it can be more difficult. Others are the reverse, and learn better
by reading than listening.
Many online courses now offer online audio and video classes but
most learning materials are still in text based.
Can you study outside the normal 'social' environment of
college? - this is a 50:50 question, as many students find
it easier not to have the social pressures and distractions of a
physical campus, whilst others feel isolated and uncomfortable being
remote. Whilst there are plenty of forums and chatrooms, this question
depends very much on the socialization style of the student.
Do you have reliable high speed broadband? - since
an online degree is exactly that - online- online degree students
must have full time access to a reliable broadband connection. There
is a lot of research to do, and many courses now use multimedia
which demands higher speed connections.
Enrollment Status
Before applying for admission to an online college you need to
know whether you meet admission criteria. In many cases you will
earn credits for past education AND past work skills. Most online
colleges provide this information online. So if you don't meet the
requirements of one college - look further. They all differ.
NOTE: your existing credits may not be able to be able due to policy
or apply when studying a completely different field .
